Here’s the comparison sellers actually need before switching: not just the headline percentages, but where each platform’s structure actually costs more, at what revenue level. (Figures checked September 2026 — both platforms’ pricing pages are the source of truth; re-check before you act on them.)
Gumroad. Direct sales — through your own profile or links — cost 10% + $0.50 per transaction, plus payment processing (2.9% + $0.30 for cards, separately). Sales through Gumroad’s Discover marketplace cost a flat 30%, processing included. Once your paid sales hit $20,000 within a calendar month, new direct sales for the rest of that month drop to 5% + $0.50 — the threshold resets monthly, and Discover sales stay at 30% regardless.
Payhip. No revenue threshold — instead, three flat monthly tiers:
| Plan | Monthly cost | Transaction fee |
|---|---|---|
| Free Forever | $0 | 5% |
| Plus | $29 | 2% |
| Pro | $99 | 0% |
Payment processing is billed separately from Payhip’s own platform fee on every tier.
Where the crossover actually lands. Below Gumroad’s $20,000/month high-volume threshold, Payhip’s Free plan (5%) already undercuts Gumroad’s standard direct-sale rate (10% + $0.50) on percentage alone. Inside Payhip’s own tiers: Free → Plus pays off once revenue passes roughly $29 ÷ (5% − 2%) ≈ $966.67/month — above that, Plus’s 2% plus its $29 flat cost beats Free’s straight 5%. Plus → Pro pays off past roughly ($99 − $29) ÷ 2% = $3,500/month — above that, Pro’s $99 flat cost with 0% take beats Plus’s 2%.
What this doesn’t capture. These are platform-fee-only numbers — they exclude payment processing, which applies on both platforms regardless of tier. They also don’t account for Gumroad’s Discover marketplace, which can send you sales you wouldn’t get on a platform without an equivalent discovery feature, or for switching costs like customer list portability (Payhip currently has no bulk import that grants existing customers access to your products on the new platform).
The honest takeaway: there’s no single percentage that settles this for every seller — it depends on your monthly revenue, transaction count, and how much of your volume comes from Discover versus your own audience. Run the math on your own numbers, not someone else’s average.
